Description
Kangaroo Bruise Blues
Composed by Drew Zaremba (as performed on Vesuvius)
Originally featured Ingrid Jensen, Bobby Shew, and Clay Jenkins!
Kangaroo Bruise Blues won 2018 Sammy Nestico Award. This piece could be called “A study of the blues”. It was originally written for trumpet masters Ingrid Jensen, Bobby Shew, Clay Jenkins, and Dennis Dotson. Each solo section gave a different aspect of the blues for them to solo over, starting with traditional blues, moving towards a stop-time be-bop section, then a modern sus4 double blues, then a modern altered blues. The chart has been re-adapted to feature members of each section of the big band. The recording by the Toshi Clinch Big Band is a perfect example to follow in terms of style and interpretation, think Thad Jones all the way!
